Rhythmic Subdivisions & Time Signatures

Techno is rhythm music. Almost all techno is built on a 4/4 time signature and a 16-step grid. In this module, you will learn how to translate classical rhythm concepts—like beats, measures, and subdivisions—into grid positions on a step sequencer.

Core Music Theory & Sound Concepts

1. Tempo (BPM)

  • Tempo is the speed of the music, measured in Beats Per Minute (BPM).
  • In a 4/4 time signature, each "beat" is a quarter note. At 120 BPM, there are exactly 2 beats per second.

2. Meter and Time Signatures

  • Meter is how beats are grouped together.
  • A time signature tells you how many beats are in a bar (the top number) and what kind of note gets the beat (the bottom number).
  • 4/4 Time: 4 beats per bar. In our 16-step sequencer, each beat is divided into 4 steps (sixteenth notes).
    • Beat 1: Steps 1, 2, 3, 4
    • Beat 2: Steps 5, 6, 7, 8
    • Beat 3: Steps 9, 10, 11, 12
    • Beat 4: Steps 13, 14, 15, 16
  • 3/4 Time (Waltz): 3 beats per bar. To represent 3/4 time, we shorten our loop length to 12 steps (3 beats $\times$ 4 steps per beat).

3. Subdivision

  • Subdivision is dividing the main beats into smaller, equal parts.
    • Quarter Notes (The Beat): Step 1, 5, 9, 13 (typical Kick pattern in Techno).
    • Eighth Notes: Step 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 (Offbeats are steps 3, 7, 11, 15).
    • Sixteenth Notes: Steps 1 through 16 inclusive.

Sequencer Tip: Program a classic 4-to-the-floor beat by placing kick drum hits on steps 1, 5, 9, and 13. Adding percussion (noise) triggers on the offbeat steps 3, 7, 11, and 15 immediately gives you a classic bouncy house/techno groove!


Your Assignment Task

  1. Experiment in the Synth Sandbox:
    • Toggle the Sequencer to a loop length of 16 steps.
    • Program a classic 4/4 beat:
      • Kick: Steps 1, 5, 9, 13 (Quarter notes).
      • Snare/Clap: Steps 5 and 13 (Backbeat).
      • Hi-Hat (Noise): Steps 3, 7, 11, 15 (Offbeat eighth notes).
    • Now, change the Loop Length dial to 12 steps to construct a 3/4 time signature waltz. Try programming a kick on step 1, a hat on step 5, and a clap on step 9.
  2. Write and Submit your Analysis:
    • Subdivision Grid: Draw or type out a text grid (using symbols like [X] for hits and [.] for rests) comparing a 4/4 loop (16 steps) to a 3/4 loop (12 steps).
    • Tempo Reflection: Play your 4/4 beat at 80 BPM, then at 135 BPM. How does the emotional energy and physical feeling of the rhythm shift?
    • Metronome Analysis: Toggle the Metronome on. Compare how the metronome sounds in 4/4 (16 steps) versus 3/4 (12 steps). Which beat gets the emphasis in each setting?
