Pentatonic Scales & Portamento

In classical notation, gliding smoothly between two notes is called a glissando (like a trombone sliding or a violinist sliding their finger up a string). In synthesis, we call this Portamento or Glide. Combined with the Minor Pentatonic scale, glide is the foundation of hypnotic techno basslines.

Core Music Theory & Sound Concepts

1. The Minor Pentatonic Scale

  • "Penta" means five. A Pentatonic scale is a five-note scale (unlike a standard major/minor scale which has seven notes).
  • Scale Degrees: The Minor Pentatonic uses the 1st, flat-3rd, 4th, 5th, and flat-7th notes of the natural minor scale. For A Minor, these notes are: A - C - D - E - G.
  • Why Techno Loves Pentatonics: It excludes the 2nd and 6th degrees. This removes the interval of a "tritone" or minor second, meaning there are no highly dissonant notes. This makes it impossible to program a "clashing" melody, which is ideal for repeating, hypnotic loops.

2. Portamento (Glide)

  • Portamento is a setting that determines how long the oscillator takes to slide from the pitch of one note to the next.
  • Instead of jumping instantly from A1 to E2, a synthesizer with glide active will bend the pitch smoothly between them over a set amount of time (e.g., $150\text{ms}$).
  • In retro acid synths, glide only triggers when notes "overlap" (legato playing), bending the notes together and creating a fluid, sliding bassline.

Glide Tip: Set the Glide slider to 300ms. Play two keys in quick succession. Notice the smooth sliding transition between the pitches. In techno basslines, this is what gives the bass its fluid, rolling quality!


Your Assignment Task

  1. Experiment in the Synth Sandbox:
    • Lock the scale dropdown to A Minor Pentatonic.
    • Program a 16-step bassline. Make sure to place some notes close to each other in pitch, and others far apart (e.g., A1 up to G2).
    • Adjust the Glide (Portamento) dial in the sandbox to $30%$. Turn on a few note overlaps or select "Glide" flags on specific sequencer steps.
    • Listen to how the pitch bends. Turn the Glide knob up to $80%$ and down to $5%$, observing the speed difference.
  2. Write and Submit your Reflections:
    • Scale Interval Analysis: Write out the pitch notes of the E Minor Pentatonic scale. Identify the interval step sizes (in tones and semitones) between each note in the scale.
    • Glide Dynamics: Explain how portamento changes the feel of the bassline. Contrast a "no-glide" staccato bassline with a "high-glide" legato bassline.
    • Dissonance Explanation: Explain in your own words why omitting certain scale steps (like the minor 2nd or tritone) makes the pentatonic scale safer for repeating techno loops.
