Synthesized Loop Composition

For your final music theory and synthesis assignment, you will step into the shoes of an electronic music practitioner. You will combine everything you have learned—waveforms, ADSR envelopes, resonant low-pass filters, scales, syncopation, and chord structures—to compose a cohesive electronic or chiptune-style looping track.

Composition Guidelines

Your track should feel complete, balanced, and structured. Aim to incorporate three distinct layers:

1. Rhythmic Layer (Drums)

  • A steady kick drum to hold the tempo.
  • Syncopated hi-hats (using the filtered noise channel) or claps to establish a groove.
  • Apply Swing ($20% - 50%$) to give the rhythm a rolling shuffle.

2. Harmonic & Melodic Layer

  • Lock your track to a specific scale (e.g., C Natural Minor or G Minor Pentatonic).
  • Program a bassline that slides smoothly using Portamento (Glide).
  • Program a melody or chord progression that fits the key, resolving from tension to rest.

3. Timbral & Dynamic Movement

  • Sculpt your sounds using the ADSR Envelopes (e.g., short pluck leads vs. slow swell pads).
  • Perform or automate a Filter Sweep to create a build-up (crescendo) and drop (decrescendo) during the loop.

Arrangement Tip: Coordinate all 4 tracks (Melody, Bass, Percussion, Kick) on the step grid using the Scale lock. Try muting the bass and percussion for the first 8 steps, then letting them drop in all at once on step 9 for a high-impact groove change!


Your Assignment Task

  1. Experiment in the Synth Sandbox:
    • Build your final track in the Chiptune Synth Sandbox.
    • Take your time balancing the volumes (gain) of each track so they don't distort or clash.
    • Fine-tune your synth settings (oscillators, filters, envelopes) to fit the "retro/chiptune" mood.
  2. Write and Submit your Portfolio:
    • Structure Log: Map out your composition step-by-step. What is the key signature? What is the tempo (BPM)? Describe the harmonic progression (if using chords) or scale degrees (if playing a bassline).
    • Synthesis Architecture Log: Detail the sound design for your main lead sound. Which waveforms did you use? What are the ADSR envelope settings? What parameter did your LFO modulate?
    • Self-Evaluation: Reflect on your composition process. How did locking your steps to a scale help you write the melody? How did syncopation affect the groove? Discuss one technical challenge you ran into (e.g., volume clashing) and how you solved it.
