"Composition is the organization of noise into a story of tension and release."
Acoustic Composition MaximFor your final music theory and synthesis assignment, you will step into the shoes of an electronic music practitioner. You will combine everything you have learned—waveforms, ADSR envelopes, resonant low-pass filters, scales, syncopation, and chord structures—to compose a cohesive electronic or chiptune-style looping track.
Your track should feel complete, balanced, and structured. Aim to incorporate three distinct layers:
1. Rhythmic Layer (Drums)
2. Harmonic & Melodic Layer
3. Timbral & Dynamic Movement
Arrangement Tip: Coordinate all 4 tracks (Melody, Bass, Percussion, Kick) on the step grid using the Scale lock. Try muting the bass and percussion for the first 8 steps, then letting them drop in all at once on step 9 for a high-impact groove change!
Submit your final loop audio recording or sequencer settings, alongside your written composition and sound design portfolio as a Markdown (.md) file using the course app submission portal.
Before you submit, please complete the Pre-Submission Self-Assessment.

We are learning to:
Synthesize and apply musical elements (rhythm, melody, harmony, timbre, dynamics) to compose a structured electronic loop.
Document sound design choices, routing architectures, and music theory components in a professional practitioner portfolio.
I can:
Compose a cohesive 16- or 32-step chiptune-esque sequence combining drums, bassline, and lead melody.
Utilize advanced techniques such as swing, filter automation, and envelopes.
Explain the harmonic and structural choices of the composition.
