Nutrition & Healthy Eating - Part 2

Suggested Duration: 1.5 Hours

"There is nothing more satisfying than picking out the freshest ingredients and creating vibrant recipes... taking pride in having a hand in the whole process of making and enjoying healthy food."

Chef Lynn Crawford, Canadian Chef & Author

Micronutrients

While macronutrients provide the fuel, Micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) are the "spark plugs" that keep your body’s systems running. From bone strength to immune function, these tiny nutrients are essential for long-term health.

Watch and Reflect:

  • Watch this video on vitamins and minerals.
  • Identify three specific micronutrients that are particularly important for someone with your level of physical activity.

Food Deserts

Eating well isn't just about choice; it’s about access. A "Food Desert" is an area where it is difficult to buy affordable or good-quality fresh food.

Environmental Redesign

Even if you don't control the grocery budget in your house, you can still "nudge" your environment to make healthy choices easier. This is about Redesigning your Space to reduce friction.

Reflect and Plan:

  • Think about your kitchen or bedroom. What makes it "hard" to eat well right now?
  • The Redesign: Choose one area to change. This could be:
    • Moving healthy snacks to eye-level in the pantry.
    • Asking to keep "trigger" junk foods in an opaque container or a hard-to-reach shelf.
    • Pre-filling a water bottle at night so it’s ready in the morning.
  • Goal: How will this specific change make it easier for you to achieve your eating goals?

Healthy Eating Tip: When redesigning your physical space to promote healthy eating (the "Environmental Redesign"), focus on the rule of visibility: if a healthy food is easy to see and reach, you are far more likely to eat it. Keep a bowl of fresh fruit on the counter and put processed snacks in a hard-to-reach cupboard.

Your Personal Fitness Recipe

Task: Now it’s time to select a meal that supports your body. Research and submit a single fitness-aligned recipe in a Markdown (.md) file containing:

  1. The Recipe: List the ingredients and simple cooking instructions.
  2. Nutritional Breakdown: Identify the primary macronutrients (proteins, carbs, fats) and key micronutrients (at least 2 specific vitamins or minerals) present in the meal.
  3. Justification: Write 2-3 sentences explaining exactly how this meal supports your fitness or activity goals (e.g., "The iron in the spinach supports oxygen transport for cardiorespiratory endurance, while the protein in the chicken aids muscle repair after resistance training").
